Richard, I use a hoist that clamps the front tire so keeping the bike upright is no problem. I use a scissors jack under the muffler support to lift the back of the bike until the tire is almost off the ground, I break the axle nut loose and then using a jack and prybar(to slighly and easily lower and raise the tire/wheel assy.) with the tire just off the deck, remove the spacers, axle shaft and brake assembly. Then I raise ts up high and drop the belt and remove the rear pulley, and turn the tire/wheel assembly out the left side, bottom edge first. Next level up hoist has a removeable plate under the rear tire/wheel so you can drop it straight down, nice. Mine is complicated with the hard bags I've installed and I do not know if I could to it on the road. Yes, some new words about the ancestry of the engineers who designed it are in order. I've been messing with bikes since the 50's and it isn't easy. Only thing I've found worse is adjusting the valves on the VS800 Intruder, you have to pull one carb, and to check the coolant you have to pull the radiator trim plate. I'm sure it gets checked every morning before being ridden!! Haven't even thought about getting the back tire off that shaft drive rig yet.
